In 2019 alone, marketers spent more than $89 billion on social media marketing. The number has steadily been on the rise because of how popular social media has become. As a social media marketer, you need to know the ins and outs of each platform, including image formatting.
Read on to learn about five imaging formatting tips for social media marketers.
1. Instagram Image Formatting
Image formatting on Instagram is different from other platforms. It supports vertical and horizontal oriented images but it is best known for its square images.
Because they support different dimensions, there are various sizes to know. Social media images on Instagram can be landscape, portrait, or square.
- Landscape: 1080 x 566 pixels
- Portrait: 1080 x 1350 pixels
- Square: 1080 x 1080 pixels
The supported ratios fall between 1.91:1 and 4:5. Even though you can use the dimensions mentioned above, it is recommended to have an image size of 1080 x 555 to 1350 pixels. The height will depend on whether the picture is portrait or landscape.
2. Twitter Image Formatting
Social media marketing on Twitter can also be done with useful images. Tweets that include pictures tend to get more likes, retweets, and click-throughs. This means you need the right images to keep people interested in coming back to see your content.
The recommended dimension for Twitter profile pictures is 400 x 400, and 1500 x 1500 for headers. The coolest thing about using Twitter is that they support GIF, PNG, and JPG formats for media. However, this means you need to be more careful about social media optimisation.
For posted Twitter photos, the recommended size is 1024 x 512 pixels. The minimum size you can use is 440 x 200 pixels. On Twitter, it is best to use the maximum size which is up to 5MB for photos and GIFS.
3. Facebook Image Formatting
For image formatting on Facebook, you need to know that they constantly update their image dimensions. This could be considered an issue for a social media marketer. To combat this problem, always upload the highest quality images you have.
You should also stick to this platform’s recommended file format which is 1200 x 630 pixels. The minimum size is 600 x 315 pixels. When you post a photo to the timeline, Facebook will automatically format it to be 500 pixels wide and fit their aspect ratio.
4. LinkedIn Image Formatting
LinkedIn is a platform where you can really showcase your company logo. The recommended size is 300 x 300 pixels for a logo. Image sizes for blog posts are 1200 x 627 and images for sharing a link updates should be 1200 x 627 pixels.
5. Pinterest Image Formatting
The image formatting size for Pinterest pins is a 2:3 ratio. Using this ensures that users can see the entire image on their feed. Square pin dimensions can be 1000 x 1000 but the recommended size is 1000 x 1500 pixels.
For image sizes for app install ads and shopping ads, you should follow the same 2:3 aspect ratio rule. For carousel pins and ads, you can use an aspect ratio of 1:1 or 2:3.

As a social media marketer, you have a lot of things to consider including image formatting. Without knowing the correct dimensions for specific platforms, your images and ads won’t reach their full potential. Social media isn’t as easy as posting a picture and hoping it gets likes.
